My Friends call me "HD"
(pronounced according to the German alphabet "Hah-Day")
You'd see my picture here if your browser can read graphics images.

0 I was born on March 5th, 1949 in Bergisch Gladbach near the 2000 year old city of Cologne in Germany. Cologne missed its 2000-year anniversary celebrations because, right about when they were gearing up for the grand festivities, they dug up a few extra ruins even older than the two millenia, and thus they were cheated out of one huge big party. Sigh, poor Colonians. :)

20 I received my technical education in Cologne from the "Nikolaus-August-Otto Ingenieurschule" (School of Engineering) which is now called Fachhochschule Köln or University of Applied Science as they call themselves in English. (Nikolaus August Otto was the inventor of the four-stroke-combustion engine, so if you drive a car you have something to thank him for.) At this illustrious educational facility that bears Otto's name, I majored in "Electrical Engineering" with a minor in "Data Processing". I have worked in the computer industry for over 20 years, with more than 15 years of experience as a manager.

20 In 1974 I married Una Jeffers, an American whom I met in Cologne in Germany. Una is the granddaughter of the late American poet Robinson Jeffers. - Una grew up in a lovely stone house called "Tor House" , it has a massive 40 foot high granite tower that her grandfather built right on the Pacific ocean in the charming little town of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

I came to the U.S.A. in the summer of 1976 and we settled for 25 years in Sunnyvale in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before I joined "Sun Microsystems, Inc." in 1989, I worked for 8 years as an engineering manager at "Rolm Corporation" a telecommunication company (now a part of Siemens AG Germany); and before that at "Spectra Medical Systems" a provider of hospital administration systems.

For almost 12 years I worked as a manager at Sun Mircosystems Inc., in Mountain View and Menlo Park in California (that is in the Silicon Valley - south of San Francisco). My last position was in the Solaris Operating System department at Sun where I was responsible for "Commands and Libraries" and for the "Application Binary Interface (ABI)" in the Operating Systems Development organization.

Now I am retired (Yippie!!) and finally I have time to concentrate and enjoy my artistic endeavors which hopefully will involve much life drawing, painting, and sculpting, and some exiting travel.

As of January 2002 we moved about 500 miles north from Sunnyvale, and we now live just outside the small town of Roseburg in the beautiful state of Oregon. Pictures of our new home can be viewed here and also on our  garden pages.
