The New Arrivals
Die Neulinge

Unfortunately the neighbor's dog got lose and took three of Una's chickens. Here are pictures of the replacements.

Leider hat der Hund vom Nachbarn sich drei von Una's Hühnern geholt. Hier sind Bilder von Ersatz.
The new brooder box


Una built a new movable "brooder box". The chicks are being kept warm with a heat lamp.

Una hat einen neuen fahrbaren Brutkasten gebaut. Eine Heizlampe wärmt die Küken.
Here they are: One rooster ("Piet"), and two hens ("Amelia" and "Beatrix"). Their names are Dutch, since they are of a Dutch breed.

Hier sind sie: Ein Hahn ("Piet"), und zwei Hennen ("Amelia" und "Beatrix"). Die Namen sind holländisch weil die Rasse aus Holland stammt.

They are about one week old now.

They're so tiny!
At his time in their lives it is difficult to know who is who.

Zu dieser Zeit ist es schwer sie auseinander zu halten.
At the beginning they need a temperature of about 95°F / 35°C

Am Anfang brauchen sie eine Temperatur von circa 95°F / 35°C
Fuzz Balls
They are still little fuzz balls, but they are growing rapidely

Noch sind es kleine Flausch-Bällchen, aber sie wachsen gewaltig

Sie werden größer, es sind jetzt keine kleinen "Wattebällchen" mehr

They are two weeks and a day now; and they have more than doubled in size.

Sie sind jetzt 2 Wochen und einen Tag alt, und haben sich in der Größe mehr als verdoppelt.

Now they are a little over 3½ weeks old

They are going through a phase of changing plumage and they look quite ugly at the moment.

Im Moment wechseln sie ihre Federn und sehen ziemlich hässlich aus.
The Mobil Chicken Hotel
The mobile Chook-Hotel out in the sun on our driveway. Frist time the little ones are outside. Lots of new sounds and real sunshine. The chicks weren't quite sure what to make of it.

Das fahrbare Hühnerhotel steht in der Sonne in unserer Einfahrt. Es ist das erste Mal daß die Küken draußen an der frischen Luft sind. Sonnenschein und all die neuen Geräuche haben ihnen aber nicht so sonderlich gefallen.

Today was another warm and pleasant day, and the chicks were again allowed outside. The trap door was opened and they could have gone downstairs onto the grass, but I think they were too afraid to try.

Heute war wieder ein schön warmer Tag hier, und die Hühner sind wieder draußen gewesen. Diesmal war die Falltüre (mit Hühnerleiter) offen, aber die Hühner war zu verängstlicht um in´s Paterre auf das Gras zu gehen und es auszuprobieren.
